Aims

1) For your child to be able to recite words, phrases and sentences as they look at them.
2) To increase your child’s vocabulary by introducing 210 new words to the programme.

Instruction notes – throughout the level

General notes

Have your child sit near you so you can observe and guide them whenever necessary.

Study Approach

Make sure your child is in the habit of reading the worksheets aloud as they complete them. Read the instructions if she/he cannot read them by themselves. This is especially important when your child begins the first page of that day’s study and when the instructions change.

Try to gradually increase the number of things that your child can do on their own (e.g. writing their name, reading the words aloud without being prompted).

Oral Reading – Fluency

Bear in mind that Level 5A is the first level in the programme in which your child is expected to read words and sentences. He/She may need help with words that they are reading for the first time. That’s okay to help them.

If your child cannot read aloud words or sentences fluently then:

    • –  model read and have them repeat after you;
    • –  have them read the same word or sentence a few times.

Letter-Writing Ability

Make sure that you child:
– traces the letters neatly and within the borders;
– traces the letters in the correct direction and stroke order.

Aims
Students develop the ability to:
– read aloud words;
– recognise the sound of each letter;
– trace all 26 lower-case letters of the alphabet.

Aims
Students:
– learn how to read aloud combinations of initial consonants and short vowels;
– begin to read sentences aloud;
– continue to develop their letter-writing ability by tracing letters more independently.

Aims
Students learn to:
– read aloud sentences of up to seven words in length;
– further build their letter-writing skills by tracing words and irregular shapes.
