Nurturing the skills to succeed

Kumon is not meant to replicate topic-by-topic your child’s school curriculum. It’s designed to develop a strong command of core skills that can be applied in subject after subject, from the most basic material through higher level study. Kumon harnesses a streamlined, fundamentals-focused approach to helping students become better learners and ultimately succeed with challenging material at the high school level.

Parents needn’t be alarmed that not every topic covered by their child’s school curriculum is precisely mirrored by Kumon.  You may ask how a child who isn’t given problems in geometry or spelling can be expected to excel in those areas, but rest assured that this is no oversight. It’s how Kumon works.

A focus on fundamentals

Kumon is streamlined to nurture essential skills that will help your child succeed throughout school. In maths, computational and arithmetical skills are stressed because they are essential to subjects all the way through calculus.  A geometry student who can square a hypotenuse without giving it a second thought, for example, can focus entirely on the rules and concepts of geometry.  Likewise, Kumon English stresses comprehension because such exercises naturally develop good grammar, writing skills, and critical reasoning ability.

Core skills with broad applications

Building a strong foundation of core skills maximises your child’s potential for success within and beyond the subjects of maths and English.  Little by little, your child builds a foundation of knowledge and a command of essential skills that have almost universal applications.  In this way Kumon develops sharp, agile minds equipped for tackling even complex abstract concepts.

Being prepared for anything

Just as a child who has learned to sight-read or play scales with dexterity will be well-equipped for all sorts of musical compositions, a Kumon student possesses equivalent skills for facing his or her academic challenges.
