Establishing a solid starting point.
A solid starting point enables children to succeed from the outset by building on a rock-solid foundation without any learning gaps to hinder them down the road. That’s how they gain confidence and momentum, and are able to advance on their own steadily and confidently through the curriculum.
Student A
- Starts at a level where he/she can solve most or all problems in a given time
- Moves forward, filling in any skill gaps
- Builds confidence by succeeding immediately
- Builds a solid foundation by mastering work before moving on
Student B
- Starts with work that he/she has not mastered
- Has no opportunity to fill in skill gaps
- Continues to struggle in problem areas
- Becomes discouraged and demotivated
You may be surprised that your child has started Kumon with material that might have been covered at school some time ago or, in some cases, even grades back. Using our diagnostic test as a guide, your Kumon Instructor has done this to pave your chil’s way to becoming a better learner.
Building on a firm foundation.
Learning concepts build upon one another like bricks in a wall. The whole structure can collapse from gaps or weak spots far below. If it’s rock-solid from the very first layer, however, there’s little chance of giving way later on. That’s why we start your child on at the level at which he or she already demonstrates a thorough command of the material. That means being able to arrive at the solutions quickly, consistently, and without laboring.
Developing disciplined study habits.
Working at such an easy level in the early weeks is so crucial because it gives children the chance to build self-esteem as they cultivate study habits they’ll need throughout the program, as well as school – habits like concentration, and the discipline of daily practice.
Nothing succeeds like success.
Intrinsic to the Kumon Method is the child’s discovery of his or her ability to succeed, and succeed otten. Kumon studnts gain confidence and independence by working on material they’re prepared to tackle.
